Fun Times With The Beckers

All the fun, even if it's not always blogged…

Sew Little Time — May 24, 2010

Sew Little Time

oh, how badly do i want to make this?

i might have some of the sewing skillz to attempt it…. but the real question – do i have the TIME?

nesting continues. i haven’t really started any of the sewing or knitting projects i once dreamed of completing before The Bumpit arrives… which, let’s be serious, could happen at any time, now (though, i’ll probably be one of those 42-weekers…) and there’s still so much to do around the house to prepare…

but a girl can dream right? i have printed off this fab tutorial, and will keep in my stash, for the day when i just may have time to attempt this!

Nesting? Oh, I Got Your Nesting Right Here! — March 8, 2010

Nesting? Oh, I Got Your Nesting Right Here!

whew- so, Friday, i posted about my To Do list… And boy, did I get some thing Ta’Done!

not everything, as i am fully aware that my lists are usually quite ambitious… but i am pretty pumped at the progress thus far.

first things first – the food.
long ago, i googled “Macaroni Grill’s Penne Rustica” recipe, b/c The Becker’s love it so. and i found a downloadable PDF document with it and 100s of other recipes knocking off food faves. fast forward to Friday, and we finally tried it. I made the sauce, AJ cooked all the protein and carbs and assembled it.

in a word? YUMMO!

i am SO not one for leftovers, but i could keep eating and eating on this… and i have… though i keep in mind that this recipe is NOT in the low fat/low cal category. (YUM!)… here’s a pic i took the day AFTER, when i was ready to dive in for some lunch:
if you would like the recipe, leave a comment with your email here. i can also send you the whole PDF cookbook if you like.

i was also pumped to get in a good 3-mile walk with the pups… and they were oh-so-happy to be out and about. Saturday was gorgeous here. I think the weather gods heard my whining for the past three months and graced us with one 60-degree day. yesterday and today are back to cloudy – though the temps are nice… so i shan’t complain all that much, i do suppose.

Saturday afternoon, i did oh-so-much more of the sewing projects to which i had on the list. here’s evidence:
i used this tutorial to make them, and it’s the easiest, most fun and probably most rewarding thing i have sewn in awhile. All you chums with babers on the way- look out for these!

one of the best parts about Saturday? AJ came home from work, we heated up some more Penne Rustica (YUM YUM YUM!) and were in bed by 7:43pm. 😉

Sunday, oh, Sunday.

We took Grandpa to church (Mom and Dad are in Cabo, and it seemed like the right thing to do… glad we did!) and had breakfast with him afterward. For almost 91-years-old… he’s so sharp and so fun to be around. it was worth waking up early! (and who am i kidding? i got 10 hours of sleep prior to the alarm!)

the rest of the day was spent prepping The Bumpit’s future space. (NESTING NESTING NESTING!)

The Obligatory “Before” shots:

here’s Sweet Lucy “helping”

then we picked up the crib and dresser and grabbed our Allen Wrenches… (Thanks to Meghan and Eric for helping maneuver the items up the stairs and into the tiny room!)

okay- still slightly boring, but progress, indeed.

the debate remains – both on bedding and wall decor. do we leave it neutral and just go with it? do we paint and utilize Grandma Becker’s vast artistic skills? much of this also hinges on the whole bedding debate on-going in my head.

a good weekend, indeed.

Goals – From here to June — March 5, 2010

Goals – From here to June

whew– some days, time goes by slowly… others, i feel like we are minutes from bringing home The Bumpit!

this post is mostly for me… but since I am probably the only one that reads it anyway, I might as well jot down a few notes.

Things I Would Like to Accomplish Before Baby Becker Arrives:

  • sewing…. for the most part
  • tame my knitting stash – have already started this by donating all the major Acrylic to my Church & Sister’s Day Care!
  • one word: photo albums – i haven’t finished the engagement scrapbook, let alone anything in the last three years!
  • Garage Sale (Scheduled for April 17!)
  • continue to de-clutter (see above)
  • continue to be good natured and accept constructive criticism about my Hoarding Tendencies
  • go through stacks of Magazines and Taste of Home issues that are seriously piling up
  • register for Bumpit
  • figure out Bumpit bedding and room decor
  • maybe even work up the nerve to start my first ever sweater – will need copious amounts of encouragement here.
  • okay, now i need a nap.

SEW Exciting! — February 26, 2010

SEW Exciting!

that’s right- i finally did my research, gathered the facts and then walked into a sewing shop and that is where i had my break down and decided to buy a new sewing machine. it could have been in any store, really… and i could have ended up with any machine. Sew Creative was the lucky store that won the machine lottery that day, folks. that’s the only way i know how to explain it.

you may recall this post, in which i couldn’t decide if it was worth the $125 to fix Dear Grandma’s machine. The Ladies at Joann’s Fabrics said that Singer’s are good, and better than most machines you buy today- so it’s probably worth the fix. A couple of the other stores i called agreed (I had no idea Lincoln had so many sewing machine stores! Yea Hand Made!).

So, as randomness would have it- i stop by a store on my lunch break, and the guy at the counter agrees – it will cost $125, but it’s probably better to do that, then buy something new and flimsy within that price range.

he leads me back to the main sewing machine fixer guy, who takes one look, says, that machine is worth $40 – but we take trades and let me show you what we have on sale.

30 minutes later, he is showing me the BMW of machines (half price, for me!) – all pretty and digital and does stuff i have never even dreamed of doing. my mind was racing. but i knew that i would never use all that stuff, and for the price, it just wasn’t worth it.

so i kindly tell him that the other model he showed me – non-digitized and $200 cheaper – is more my style. so he brings that one out, gives me some helpful hints and then i say, “Wrap it up, i’ll take it home.” (sorry Grandma!).

last night was the first night this week that i could get to some sewing…

this thing runs so smoothly. it’s easy to thread. i’m in heaven… and now wondering why i waited so long to upgrade.

the plan for this weekend is to get more done- b/c all of you girls out there that keep having babies- this girl has to keep up with her sewing!!!

and here, for your Lucy enjoyment, is a moment of zen:

Busy, Busy Miss B! — October 8, 2009

Busy, Busy Miss B!

i feel like i have been going non-stop for quite awhile. and i think it’s true.

this week has been especially crazy and we are coming up on a hugely busy weekend– but i do see that light at the end of the tunnel, yes i do.

i was oh-so-excited to realize that Monday is Columbus Day, and though i am not a major follower of this such holiday, it does happen to be a day that the State Government closes its doors, and i kind of technically work for the state, that means This Girl gets to hang out at home with the pooches and probably get even MORE marked off that list!!!

What list, you might ask?

This list:
– sewed a bandana blanket to send to a friend in France that is battling cancer
Sprint PictureMail
– knitted two scarves with some suede yard i had no idea what to do with (thank goodness for “speed sticks“)
– started knitting a new toddler hat, and realized that the yarn is spun in Mitchell, NE! (This Girl is pumped!)
– made three Tu-Tu’s
– Visited with Neil
– attended church (i know!)
– tried to tidy and organize, which really only led to more of a mess

and on Sunday, (after church!) i got the whim to paint the sun porch – and painting only really happens for me on a whim. if i try to plan it, i end up talking myself out of it. so the whim struck, and i began painting….
i didn’t have the foresight to take a true “Before” picture, but it ended up that the leftover paint from my parent’s basement was a perfect match for the existing color — i was assuming it would be darker… so, not much change there, except that its a lot “Cleaner” with no scuffs and years of grunge.

but i DID take a “before” picture of the floor… which, i thought was “okay” to last another winter season, but AJ talked me into it, and on another whim, i went home during my lunch on Tuesday and edged and rolled on a coat.

here’s the “Before”:
whew, looking at it now, yes, it needed severe attention!

here’s the “After” after one hour and one coat:
i was really hoping that it would be a one-coat thing… because if the idea of painting isn’t daunting enough, doing it all over again really puts me over the edge….
that is, until i break down and realize that it does need one more coat– and then i am quickly reminded how much faster and nicer that second coat goes on. (see, it’s all just really a mind-game!)

here’s the final painted product:
aah, smooth and shiny!

then we got funky and started hanging up new hooks and coat hangers, etc…. this being my most favorite piece in the room:

and then, finally, last night, i was able to put all the extra pieces in and make it a functional room again:
i am so not in love with our shoe rack – but its the best place to keep the shoes and i would love to find a hall tree that wasn’t too terribly expensive that could hold it all… a girl can dream, right?

Also, I am attempting to try and save my hibiscus tree… though, this not being Hawaii, i wouldn’t be surprised if I am unsuccessful.

anyway- so back to the list:
– tidy the house (still slightly, okay QUITE, unsuccessful here… am totally willing to accept any and all advise from you domestic goddesses out there… seriously!)
– print, and organize photos taken since wedding (2.5 years ago)… Walgreens was happy to see me, when i picked up my 700+ photos!!! let’s just say, i took advantage of their 10-cent per picture offer if you order 50 or more… i saved $39!
– send off baby gift to child that is now one-month old — and i forgot to take a picture of the supremely cute blue, blue and blue stripped blanket i knitted… (have asked the mama for photos once she receives!)
– Oh! and i finished Wicked… eh. (let me just say- a whole lot (200 pages) of bulid-up with a very quick end and very little explanation on why certain loose ends remained loose)

stuff still on the list:
– more sewing
– more knitting (and figure out how to cast on, as well as knit with Double-Pointed Needles) — any Knitting Divas out there, PLEASE HELP!
– the whole photo thing (awaiting my order of FOUR photo books from — did you know that shipping is FREE this month?)
– finish details on planning State Day Celebration at Sorority, Saturday (ideas on centerpieces? anyone? it will probably end up as pumpkins with red and green ribbons!)
– continue my quest to take over the world!!!!

whew… not too much to ask, really… 😉
