Fun Times With The Beckers

All the fun, even if it's not always blogged…

The Big Reveal – part 1 — June 7, 2010

The Big Reveal – part 1

Okay- no baby yet… but 11 days until the due date. (though, i swear i will go over… start placing your bets now, folks!)

and i apologize to my Reader, for keeping you on pins and needles, i am sure, awaiting the Big Reveal of how the nursery turned out.

it all started here with my panic regarding “To Bumper or Not To Bumper… that is the question”

well, i decided against the bumper, as explained here.

and then it was a matter of putting the big pieces in the room, as shown here, and then, in an oh-so-out-of-order fashion… i painted the room… no real pics to show, sorry.

and then the nursery sat for awhile. it became sort of a staging room for the other nesting projects that were going on in the house– such as the bathroom fix-up, as detailed here. (Oh, that AJ, he’s been nesting just about as much as me… it’s just that his projects seem to be bigger and dustier… but more on that, to come in a different post!)

and then, last week i was up before the birds, deciding to finally finish this puppy off, as posted here.

well, today, i am finally back with some photos to share… what’s that i hear? a “Hip Hip Horray”? Why, thank you very much!

I’ll start with the tiny bathroom that has since had a make-over. this is directly across the tiny hallway from the nursery
(okay, what you see here is mostly a new paint color on the walls.)

notice the fixed wall and though you can’t see it- the pocket door WORKS!!! Yippee Skippy!
(you can also spy the nursery in the background…)

this is a shot from the door way of the nursery… that nook is just the perfect fit for the crib!
and you can kind of see the bed skirt i created with the Amy Butler fabrics and the easy-peasy tutorial from Young House Love.

our changing and seating area… cozy.

taken from behind the rocker – here is the closet with the covering i made (thankyouverymuch) and the built-in dresser with the new hardware, thanks to AJ and his drill skillz.
(notice who snuck (sneaked?) into the pic!)

and there’s the pups, loving the new space. i sometimes catch them sniffing around in there. boy-oh-boy do they have a bunch of new smells soon heading our way!

and, a final picture of the crib area.

sweet dreams, little Bumpit!

what’s a girl to do? — June 2, 2010

what’s a girl to do?

the scene:
you wake up at 4am (nature calls… for the 4th time, seriously) and then you can’t fall back asleep… so your mind starts racing with all the things you need to get done in the not so distant future.

then you start to realize that if you don’t write this down, you’ll probably forget most of it.

and then you are so wide awake that it simply makes sense to get up and start doing some of the things whirling around in your head and effectively check them off the list (mental or physical).

so that was me. today. 4am.

up, and nesting a wee bit further.

the pups were happy to be released from the kennels, but confused as to why it was still dark, and they were still tired. THOR immediately went in to snuggle with AJ… Lucy stuck by my side and tried to squeeze into my lap (what’s left of it) during the times while i was sitting on the floor.

at this point, i think i am 98% packed and ready for the hospital (though i’ll probably think of more and more things to add… like, T-shirts, yes, i need one or two of those still) and the nursery is just about ready for me to take pictures to post for the next blog entry!

yes, i shall leave you there with rapt anticipation for finished nursery photos! ooh, i am such a tease!

Funny Things Heard While Pregnant #9 — May 26, 2010

Funny Things Heard While Pregnant #9

I am learning that sometimes people just don’t know what to say, or can’t help themselves from saying what they want to say… Thus continues a compendium of the funny/odd/weird/tasteless/forthright things people have said to me whilst in “the family way”.

Number 9:

amidst the nesting, i have amassed a pile of clothing items that were worthy of a visit to a local Consignment Shop (go check it out – and buy my stuff!). I was mindlessly browsing the store while the woman was checking my items to see if she could consign them for me.

once she was finished, she called me up to the counter, and then said, “So, when is your little boy due?”

well, that caught me off guard! i explained that we didn’t know what we are having.

she said, “Oh, well you’re carrying just like I did with my little boy. From the back you can’t even tell you’re pregnant”…

well that was kind of her… and i’d have to disagree… but kind, indeed…

but we’ll all still have to wait and see… roughly 3.5 weeks until the big announcement!

the hidden perils of “Nesting” — May 24, 2010

the hidden perils of “Nesting”

no one mentioned that in the midst of nesting (and boy am i in said midst)… i might run across actual nests.

okay, not so much a nest, did i find… because i stopped digging once i found RODENT DROPPINGS.

if you know me at all… or have read this post you know that a fan of mice, am not i. (Mickey & Minnie?– well, we’ll chat about that later)

even in searching for that post to link, i couldn’t finish reading it. gives me the heebee jeebees.

and there was the evidence. in the corner of our little attic, that i was assured was rodent-proof… especially after the flying rodent expedition of 2007.

Prior to common belief, The Becker’s have been Infiltrated, folks!

so i left for work today- leaving AJ in charge of taking care of the problem… with the shop-vac… NOT my Dyson! i hope that he also finds a way to remedy the problem from exacerbating itself… or i might just have to move out.

especially since the attic is adjacent to the nursery and INSIDE our room….

want to see an unhappy Mama? look no further.

Nesting? Oh, I Got Your Nesting Right Here! — March 8, 2010

Nesting? Oh, I Got Your Nesting Right Here!

whew- so, Friday, i posted about my To Do list… And boy, did I get some thing Ta’Done!

not everything, as i am fully aware that my lists are usually quite ambitious… but i am pretty pumped at the progress thus far.

first things first – the food.
long ago, i googled “Macaroni Grill’s Penne Rustica” recipe, b/c The Becker’s love it so. and i found a downloadable PDF document with it and 100s of other recipes knocking off food faves. fast forward to Friday, and we finally tried it. I made the sauce, AJ cooked all the protein and carbs and assembled it.

in a word? YUMMO!

i am SO not one for leftovers, but i could keep eating and eating on this… and i have… though i keep in mind that this recipe is NOT in the low fat/low cal category. (YUM!)… here’s a pic i took the day AFTER, when i was ready to dive in for some lunch:
if you would like the recipe, leave a comment with your email here. i can also send you the whole PDF cookbook if you like.

i was also pumped to get in a good 3-mile walk with the pups… and they were oh-so-happy to be out and about. Saturday was gorgeous here. I think the weather gods heard my whining for the past three months and graced us with one 60-degree day. yesterday and today are back to cloudy – though the temps are nice… so i shan’t complain all that much, i do suppose.

Saturday afternoon, i did oh-so-much more of the sewing projects to which i had on the list. here’s evidence:
i used this tutorial to make them, and it’s the easiest, most fun and probably most rewarding thing i have sewn in awhile. All you chums with babers on the way- look out for these!

one of the best parts about Saturday? AJ came home from work, we heated up some more Penne Rustica (YUM YUM YUM!) and were in bed by 7:43pm. 😉

Sunday, oh, Sunday.

We took Grandpa to church (Mom and Dad are in Cabo, and it seemed like the right thing to do… glad we did!) and had breakfast with him afterward. For almost 91-years-old… he’s so sharp and so fun to be around. it was worth waking up early! (and who am i kidding? i got 10 hours of sleep prior to the alarm!)

the rest of the day was spent prepping The Bumpit’s future space. (NESTING NESTING NESTING!)

The Obligatory “Before” shots:

here’s Sweet Lucy “helping”

then we picked up the crib and dresser and grabbed our Allen Wrenches… (Thanks to Meghan and Eric for helping maneuver the items up the stairs and into the tiny room!)

okay- still slightly boring, but progress, indeed.

the debate remains – both on bedding and wall decor. do we leave it neutral and just go with it? do we paint and utilize Grandma Becker’s vast artistic skills? much of this also hinges on the whole bedding debate on-going in my head.

a good weekend, indeed.
